In a tragic turn of events, a man known only as Azeez reportedly plunged into the lagoon in Lagos and drowned as he attempted to evade arrest following allegations of theft involving several bags of cement.
Confirming the incident to NAN on Sunday, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson of the Police Command in Lagos, provided details of the unfortunate event. He stated that the director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in Lagos Central alerted the Ikoyi Police Division about the incident on Friday around 12:20 pm.
Hundeyin recounted that the LASEMA director received a distress call at approximately 10:45 am on Friday, reporting an incident at the Lekki/Ikoyi Link Bridge. Upon arrival at the scene, a sizable crowd had gathered at the waterside, witnessing the lifeless body of a man who had tragically drowned.
The deceased was subsequently identified as Azeez, and his death was confirmed by paramedics from the Pre Hospital Care unit in Lagos. Investigations revealed that prior to his fatal plunge, Azeez had been pursued by Elijah Amos, a cement vendor, allegedly for the theft of several bags of cement.
Further details emerged as Hundeyin disclosed that the police visited the scene to assess the situation. The deceased’s body was later removed and transferred to the Mainland General Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for autopsy and preservation, as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
